My Adam’s apple is still vibrating from this mix! This week I’m bringing back some good old fashioned “circuit” music, or “main room” house music. Two of my favorite tribal labels were Star 69 and Twisted America, and this mix pays homage to each of those. If you’ve never danced all night in a sea of shirtless muscle boys to the music of Peter Rauhofer or Victor Calderone played on a Steve Dash soundsystem, you really haven’t lived life to its fullest!

This one takes me back to where it all started. Around 1997-8, I began DJing high school dances at boarding school in Massachusetts. My thing was subtly incorporating underground, funky music that kids didn’t hear on the radio or at home. That’s how I got into the various global scenes that existed at that time, like electronica, drum & bass, big beat, and NYC tribal house. I was discovering music by flipping through tracks on DJ mix CDs at listening stations in Tower Records, HMV, and Newbury Comics. I would go to our local DJ record stores — Boston Beat and Satellite Records — and listen to what was brand new in the nightclubs that I was too young to enter. Or I’d listen to alternative radio late at night where they would broadcast live from the clubs on Lansdowne Street. I started clocking the names of artists, producers and labels that I liked, and would seek out other DJ mixes that included those names somewhere in the track list. That would lead me to discover additional names, and the list just kept growing. It’s still growing.
