Why don’t we run away together, to a place where 90’s house music reigns supreme over all the land? In this edition, Don atones for last week’s technical mishap by laying down the gauntlet. Enjoy two full hours of deep house, Tee Scott disco, and even some Italo for your earbrains. Shake to the rhythm of the Latin groove!

Sorry folks, the recording unit in the radio studio did not work last night. It was set to use a horrible “auto-limiter” feature so the recording got completely messed up — volume jumping up and down constantly. It’s just not listenable, so I will not be posting it this week. Stay tuned next week and I promise to bring extra fire for the next edition.

Yours truly,
Don Play

Sawubona futhi abangane!

Our four-hour excursion into THE MUSIC OF SOUTH AFRICA from 1968-1994 continues as Don Play moves on to the funkier stuff. Yes, there is plenty of Harari to go around!!!

Lucky for you, Don has done the heavy lifting here. Listen and observe how outside influences interact and infiltrate the bubble of institutionalized apartheid, and how South African music evolves into a more unified format that galvanizes separate “homelands” and brings together a nation. This is the soundtrack to a country on the rise. Change is inevitable.

Sawubona! This week we have an extra special four hour, double edition educational podcast tracing THE MUSIC OF SOUTH AFRICA from 1968-1994. Don Play opens his archive of ultra-rare 45 and 12″ records that he painstakingly has accumulated over his occasional trips to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. The journey begins with mbaqanga and township jive, and then progresses to jazz, afro-disco, bubblegum, international pop, and ends up at house music (where else?).

Special shout outs go to all of Don’s family and friends tuning in from around the world. Most importantly, special thanks and recognition to the recording artists and producers for their creative work in the face of harsh realities. May you all receive credit for the work which you have produced and given to the world.

One final note, please forgive Don for any minor factual inconsistencies here. He is doing his best for you, the people! Feel free to add your thoughts and memories in the comment section below.
